February Training 2010
Warick from Ringwood Centrelink and Chris from Job Services Australia gave a very interesting and informative overview of the organisations to 27 members and volunteers.
The purpose of Centrelink is to assist clients to become self sufficient while supporting those in need. It aims to make available the total help offered by the Commonwealth government in friendly and courteous manner.
Last year was the busiest one ever. Nationwide $87 billion was paid out on behalf of 27 parts of government. There were 6.84 million clients seen by 28,000 staff . There were 33 million phone calls.
In the Maroondah area 56,000 entitlements were delivered with about 600 people a day through the office. Locally unemployment rose by 33% but this was still only a rise to 4.2% well below the national average of 5.3%. Although there are 3,459 Newstart recipients in Ringwood this is 55% less than 12 months ago.
The ageing population and the downturn in Super funds and self managed retirement investment has led to more Seniors seeking Centrelink benefits and Health cards.
